TROUBLESHOOTING
===============

The Explorer layout has tabs, the wrong ribbon, or incompatible title bars
---------------------------------------------------------------------------
1. Open Windhawk.
2. Confirm "Classic Explorer navigation bar" is installed and enabled.
3. Open the mod's Settings.
4. Set Explorer style to "Classic ribbon UI (no tabs)".
5. Save the setting and restart File Explorer.

This Windhawk setup is required only for the complete visual package. The XP
Task Pane itself works without Windhawk.

The pane does not appear in a newly opened File Explorer window
---------------------------------------------------------------
1. Open View > Navigation pane and untick Navigation pane.
2. Close every File Explorer window, then open a new one.
3. If the pane is still missing, run "Repair XP Task Pane.cmd" as
   administrator.
4. Open a new File Explorer window.
5. Check Task Manager for:
     XPTaskPaneWindowWatcher.exe
     XPTaskPane-Embedded.exe

If another Explorer bar is enabled, close it. Two Explorer bars can compete
for the same left-side pane position.

The pane appears after a delay or only in some windows
------------------------------------------------------
Run the repair command, then close every Explorer window. Do not launch the
embedded EXE manually; the watcher and registered Explorer component coordinate
new windows.

The normal folder tree replaces the Task Pane
---------------------------------------------
Right-click the Task Pane and open Settings.

"Allow XP Task Pane and navigation pane side by side" controls whether both
can remain open together. With the option off, the folder tree temporarily
replaces the XP Task Pane, matching normal Windows XP behavior.

Drive names are not centered until the mouse passes over them
-------------------------------------------------------------
Confirm XPDriveTitleCenter.exe is running. If it is missing, run Repair.

Also run "2 - Apply XP Drive Appearance.cmd". The centering helper is designed
around the title-only drive layout produced by the TileInfo change.

Drive free-space or filesystem lines are still visible
-------------------------------------------------------
Run "2 - Apply XP Drive Appearance.cmd", then close every File Explorer window
and open a new one.

The ribbon corner is missing, pale, or shows the original buttons
---------------------------------------------------------------
1. Stop and remove any older external "XP Ribbon Corner Helper" program.
2. Disable or remove older custom ribbon-corner/suppressor Windhawk mods.
3. Confirm "Classic Explorer navigation bar" remains enabled and set to
   "Classic ribbon UI (no tabs)".
4. Confirm you compiled the numbered 1.0.0 source supplied by this package.
5. Recompile and enable the supplied ribbon-corner mod in Windhawk.
6. Restart File Explorer once.

The 1.0.0 ribbon source embeds its approved logo and does not depend on the
Task Pane's asset folder. Do not run two ribbon-corner replacements together.

Explorer selection is modern, orange, or leaves a retained rectangle
---------------------------------------------------------------------
Confirm the "Explorer XP Solid Selection" custom Windhawk mod is enabled.
Recompile it from the numbered source in this package if necessary.

Search causes the Task Pane to pause
------------------------------------
That is intentional. The lightweight search guard freezes the last valid pane
visual while Explorer owns the search surface, preventing the heavier crash
loop found in earlier builds. The pane resumes after leaving search.

Installation reports a locked file
----------------------------------
Close every File Explorer window and run Repair again. If an older Explorer
process still owns the component, sign out of Windows, sign back in, and rerun
Repair. The installer deliberately does not force-restart Explorer, RetroBar,
or the taskbar.

Where are the logs?
-------------------
C:\ProgramData\XP Task Pane for File Explorer\Logs

The newest Install or Uninstall log contains the most recent result.

Last resort
-----------
1. If using the complete visual package, leave "Classic Explorer navigation
bar" enabled and set to "Classic ribbon UI (no tabs)".
2. Disable the two custom Windhawk mods supplied by this package.
3. Run "Uninstall XP Task Pane.cmd".
4. Sign out and back in.
5. Run "1 - Install XP Task Pane.cmd".
6. Apply the drive appearance.
7. Reinstall the two supplied custom Windhawk sources if desired.

Do not copy individual files from historical developer backups into this beta.
